St. Petersburg
A city of sudden and historic changes, St
Petersburg turned 300 years old in 2003. Russian President
Vladimir Putin hearkens from this Venice of the North,
and allowed for extensive restorations of the city before
the anniversary.
Several years later, the city's main
thoroughfares and shopping districts are still thriving
from this recent beautification. And it was certainly
about time.
From its dramatic birth at the order of Peter the Great, in the early years of the 18th century, the city has suffered turbulent years of revolution, the freezing death and starvation of the Nazi siege, the grim purges of Stalin and the end of the Communist era in the 1990s. |
